English 3 Lesson 20

“Is the language of Foxe still compelling today?”

John Foxe was a English historian who was born in England in 1516.When he died he was 70 years old. He had wrote about history and spent his whole life in literature. He was most known for his book, “Acts and monuments.” It was known more popularly as “Foxes book of Martyrs.” No many argue today whether or not the writing is still compelling. Most people have a hard time understanding the writing, as the 16th century English style is tremendously different from modern times. The book itself is about the martyrs for Christianity and the suffering people had to go through the keep the religion alive and well.

The book is about all the people who died for what they believed in. In this case, it was Christ. They died because deep down inside, something compelled them to. A good example of this is Lady Jan Gray. She died when she was 17. She was decapitated. Foxe describes as noble and good. A person who held their head high and won. That is a very interesting read that even holds it own in the world today. This book at the time was one of the finest pieces of literature out there. However, as time goes on, opinions tend to change, grammar changes, and the relevancy changes. However, even though this book was written long ago, there is still something enthralling about reading it. Something mesmerizing about the way it was crafted. The Grammar of the time was so different. while for some that makes the reading difficult, I disagree, I think that it makes it more engaging.

The stories throughout the entire writing talk about the executions of the martyrs. It talks about how people are killed for what the believe in. For someone to die for what the =y believe in takes a special soul. They have to in true fashion believe. That is what makes the book interesting as well. That fact that someone would die for a cause they believed in so much spoke to me. I can connect with that, and I think I lot of other people can As well.

This writing is a way to look into the past and see what true determination was. This writing was about the martyrs that died for god. The respected the world they lived and under stud that physical life was not the only life for them. They knew God and planned their journey, and they were just following it. This writing will never lose the power it has because of the messages inside.
