“Describe the differences between Oliver’s view of military goals vs. Roland’s.”
The song of Roland is from the 11th century and discusses the military leader named Roland. The story is based around the battle between Christianity and Islam. However, when written into the story it is discussed as good vs evil. The poem which was recovered later was known as the fist piece of French ancient literature. This poem is packed with information with war, betrayal and other aspects of gruesome battle between men. The poem also talks about confessions and the sins of St. peter, and there are also many things about poly carp before his death. There is a lot of significance to this document to the world and future civilizations. Within the story, it is not only Roland who is a general. There is also a general named Oliver. His is described as being the total opposite of Roland. Roland was valiant and Oliver was wise.
Within the story we seen that these two have have completely different goals. Roland is souly focused on fighting with honor and glory. He didn’t seem to be interested in a military win. Rather he said that you cannot win a war without honor and glory. Oliver was the complete opposite. He was completely focused on a military victory. He did not want to fight with honor and victory. Roland was focused on fighting for what you believe in and sticking with it. Fighting so your children can be free. Oliver did not care about what he believed in, all he wanted to do is win. And while these two had completely different views of religion and war, they fought together, and won. They fought and their strategies were successful.
Throughout time there are many examples of this relationship being successful. One could argue these two were like the ancient odd couple. One wants to fight for Christ and glory, and the other one wants to fight to win. This is also a prime example of how Christianity was founded. We seen all through time, people in power had influence. Roland and Oliver certainly had influence over the masses, as they just won a massive war, and as a result Christianity was able to spread bigger and bigger. There effects and still here today. Christianity is the largest relation in the world,it also has the most conversions of all religions.
Religion is the most powerful force on earth. It can be given but never taken away. It can always win. It cant be destroyed yet it can destroy. We see this in the world today. Hitler tried to exterminate Jewish people, and kill the religion. It didn’t work. Because religion cant be destroyed. It is always there. No matter how hard you deny God, he still loves you. He never stops loving you. God’s love is forever.
