- What does the evidence show about education in England before the compulsory state system was established? Before the system was established a large amount of the population had received formal education. In fact, 95 percent of 15 year old’s at the time were literate. By the time the system was introduced many parents had already begun educating their children in some way.
- What is classical liberalism? The basic idea of liberalism is less government and more power towards the people. Freedom of trade and the least amount of government intervention are big ideas. They believed in the government being in place to protect the people and let them have their freedom. They also believed in freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to private property.
- Choose one of the works discussed in lesson 83 and explain how it reflects the principles of classical liberalism. One of the works is a story called the Petition of Candle Makers. In this story we see a group of candle makers complaining about their income. They do not like the sun because it gives off free light. If there is free light, people will not want to buy their candles. We see the group create a petition to enforce the government to make people keep their windows shut. If their windows are closed, then the free light cannot be let into their homes. This story may sound ridiculous but it is meant to poke fun at the falseness of competition. This story is meant to show how government intervention on free market would destroy free trade.
