  1. What is an indulgence? An indulgence is paying for ones sins. There was fear of punishment by God from Catholics. People would pay their own money to the Catholic Church to ease, or abolish the punishment for the sin that they committed. Indulgences were banned in 1567, however there were still ways to have an indulgence. Things such as charitable donations were considered indulgences to the church. However, in the year 2000, they returned with Pope John Paul II. He brought them back for the celebration of the church’s 3rd millennium.
  2. What was the Great Schism? What factors brought it on? The Great schism started because of different types of religious beliefs and ideas. It started because of all the disagreements and political arguments . Adding to that was different translations and beliefs of peoples, and slowly things were splitting. After the Schism ended the Orthodox church split into the Eastern Orthodox church, and Western Catholic Church.
  3.  How was Philip II Augustus significant in French history? Philip was very significant in French History. He made the crown, or ruler, more powerful than had ever been. He had also expanded things such as the land of the empire. This caused for more expansion of feudalism to take place. This meant profits for France. He also changed the power between France and England, to France having more power than England. Along with that, he also had construction and remodeling done all about the country, with Paris being where he lived. He built a center market for converse and travel, and paved roads all throughout the country. Lastly, King Philip ruled as a religious figure, giving him more power than any one who held his position at the time.
