- What was Christendom? Christendom basically referred to all of the Christians in the world. It also refers to when Christians of all types of people actually held land and power. Essentially the Catholic church was in charge, and all over Europe, everyone was a catholic Christian. With this spread, the monasteries were sending monks out to all the countries and being chosen as professors.
2. Describe the events that took place during the conflict between Pope Gregory VII and Henry IV. What was at stake? The events that took place were not bloody or violent. Rather it was a power struggle between Pope Gregory and King Henry. The struggle was about who got to appoint church officials. The king thought that he should have been able to appoint the official, however the pope was furious with this. He saw this and threatened to excommunicate Henry. With excommunicating, everyone acknowledges and sees it as real. This was a threat to Henry, and so he backed down and traveled to the pope. When he arrived, the pope redacted the excommunication.
3. What were the problems besetting the Church in the tenth and eleventh centuries? What was “moderate reform” The problems with the church in the tenth and eleventh centuries were power struggles. One problem was the People were not paying attention to laws put in place. Their was also people listening to the church, and to the state. The people recognized Henry as the king, however they still listened to the pope, and there was a confusion of power. The moderate reform was that the lay people were appointing officials to the church, even they they had no right to.
