Throughout Hellen Keller’s life, there had been many tough obstacles for someone like her. Considering a portion of her life was spent as a mute, she really didn’t have great communication with the people around her. Helen Keller felt as if she was living in a prison. She couldn’t talk, see, or hear. Life was probably very difficult for her considering those things. Helen did not feel a sense of freedom living, as someone always had to be with her helping her with everything. Even simple things like eating or using the bathroom, someone always had to be there to help her. So in a sense she really had no personal freedom. She felt like she was living in a prison, but this was about to change.
The first change in her life to make her feel more free was when she learned to communicate with other people around her. By using her hand to feel the motions and sounds on people’s mouths, she was able to replicate it and begin communicating. Obviously this is one of the biggest events in her life. Learning to talk without hearing is a great feat and obstacle she overcame. This is one of the biggest things for her, as she gained a tremendous amount of freedom. She had been freed from relying on other people to communicate for her. This was obviously huge for Keller. This showed that she would break out of the prison and there was hope for becoming truly independent.
The Second major change in her life was she learned what water was. Before, Hellen Keller could not truly understand what water was until Ms. Sullivan poured some on her hands. Now Keller finally understood what she was trying to get all those years. She had the freedom of knowing what to drink. This freed her. Without the water, she never would have opened her mind to the world around her. This caused her to want to explore and touch everything. She wanted to know what the world was like. So in a sense this was a big event, as she now wanted to explore and keep an open mind about everything.
The last event is when Helen Keller wanted to climb a tree. She had wished to climb the tree, even though she was aware of its dangers, Helen gives it time. And in time, she climbs the tree anyway, despite the danger for her. This event shows that Helen is free, she can do what she wants when she wanted. This truly ends the point of her thinking she is in a prison, and her whole life is a prison,as she has conquered a tremendous fear and obstacle.
Throughout Helen Keller’s life there have been obstacles and feats to accomplish. And in the beginning of her story she believed that she was living in a prison, as she could not talk, hear, or see. This obviously made life very difficult from an early age. However as time went on, she became free of mind and soul.
