Western civ 1 Lesson 20

Socrates is one of the most well known philosphers in the world. He is known to have created modern western philosphy because of his ideas and teachings. His main concerns was with mortality and interpersonal relations. it was he who established the idea of one truth and one idea for all things.

Socrates however did disagree with others. One of the main people he disagreed with is the Sophists. The sophists did not believe in truth, but rather in public vote, and persuasion. They were skilled speakers, which made them all the more convincing. The Sophists also did not believe in the ideas of morals. Meaning, if wanted, you could act in your best interests. They even charged fees, to teach people to talk and persuade like them. They believed the man was the highest thing. They believed that man would be able to tell if it was right or wrong, and that man could make the decision between right and wrong.

Socrates disagreed saying their is one truth for everything. 2+2 will always equal 4.

Allegory of the Cave was one of Socrates ideas. He said that there were people in a cave and that people saw shadows. What Socrates was meaning is if true knowledge is not sought after, then the shadows of knowledge will be what you believe in. This is important because it tells people to go out and seek the knowledge that you really deserve.
